Biography

Rod Boyd is 57 years of age, married with 2 children, aged 29 and 22years.

Rod Boyd was born and educated in the Western suburbs of Melbourne. He served for 6½ years in the Victoria Police, throughout this service being stationed at Western Suburbs Police Stations.

In 1990 he commenced as a talk back host and specialty program presenter at Melbourne radio station 3UZ. Throughout this period Rod was always passionate about his beloved Western suburbs and established a very loyal listener following, and was regarded as someone who passionately cared about the community and the issues before them.

In 1996 he took up the role as General Manager of Western Radio Broadcasters Inc, a community radio station based in the Western Suburbs at Brooklyn, using the call sign STEREO 974. Since Rod took up this role he has re-shaped the station and has been actively involved in Emergency Response Broadcasting for the area west of Melbourne. More

Under Rod’s leadership the station has received numerous awards from Councils, State Government Departments, Emergency Services and Community leaders and groups for these emergency communications procedures that have been put into place. The system that has been developed has been put to the test and it works.

Part of the uniqueness of the system developed at Stereo 974 is the ability to communicate in various Ethnic languages. This came about by Rod recognising that the Ethnic mix throughout the Western area of Melbourne was extremely high with some 46% of households alone in the City of Brimbank speaking a language other than English at home. STEREO 974, now proudly broadcast weekly in 11 different languages, and this is continually expanding, catering to Emerging Communities and the difficulties they face. STEREO 974 has effectively become the “VOICE OF THE WEST”.

Rod continues in his role of General Manager and is called on by numerous groups and Government departments when assistance is required to utilise the radio station to communicate messages to the community such as fire safety campaigns and the like. Rod was a founding Business Mentor and continues to volunteer in this role at the Young Offenders Unit at Port Phillip Maximum Security Prison in Laverton on a weekly basis. Young Offenders are mentored in business skills, so that they can leave Prison and become contributing members of the community, as well over a period of three years some $36,000-00 has been donated to Charities from this program.
